My husband and I had never been to a Bed & Breakfast before. Dawn and David Fleming own the Woodrow House Bed & Breakfast here in Lubbock on 19th Street and Boston right across from the Texas Tech Campus and had put together a Wonderful Winter Weekend for couples. We decided to make it happen and attend. Neither of us knew what to expect so we just went to have fun.
I took off work after Trends & Friends and we rushed to get there by dinner so we could partake in everything. We walked in and were greeted by hellos and were asked if we needed help with our luggage and offered a glass of wine or drink. But it wasn’t overwhelming by any stretch…it was like coming home to your family after you hadn’t seen them in a long time. They were excited to see you and you were happy to see them. Everything about walking in reminds you of home. The piano in the foyer and the comfortable living room full of laughter and happy people. We started to meet the other couples, the Oakes from El Paso (whose daughter Tori attends Texas Tech), the Bakers from Houston (whose daughter Lindsey attends Texas Tech), the Burnams from Plainview (who I’m excited to say saw the event on Trends & Friends) who were celebrating a birthday, and one of the long term occupants at the Woodrow House, “Senator” Bob Krueger, who teaches a couple of classes at Texas Tech in Political Science. Dinner was ready and we ate dinner in the dining room! I don’t know about anyone else but how often do you actually prepare a meal and sit down with your family and eat and enjoy conversations without phones and social media? We did and it was wonderful!
Highlight I think for everyone involved was a Whiskey Tasting. We had never done this before either and it was so educational and fun seeing what flavors each person liked or didn’t like. It’s something I certainly want to do again. Then we played games that Dawn and David organized for everyone and it brought on more laughter and stories and more fun.
I knew I had to be in bed since I had to be up early for a friend’s baby shower on Saturday morning so I went to our room. There were even little chocolates on the pillows for us and they left a carafe of water in case we got thirsty during the night. There were plenty of outlets to plug all of our electronics into. Our room was the 50’s room featuring Buddy Holley, Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe. We had a balcony we could go out and sit on and just relax and see the pool and hot tub. The huge claw foot tub in the bathroom was huge and fit the decade. And don’t even let me get started on the sheets on the bed…I’ve never slept on such amazing sheets. You can actually order them from Dawn and have them at your home and it is worth it!!!
I know it seems like I’m rambling but everything was just so wonderful and we hadn’t even stayed the night yet! I could tell we had made new friends that we would have past the weekend.
So Saturday was breakfast first, then loading up in the Limo and heading to Llano Estacado Winery for a tour of their beautiful new building. Everyone had a great time and we found that the Celebration sparkling wine was a new favorite among the group. Back in time for lunch and then it was nap time…Yes you heard me right, we had nap time…It was glorious! Of course I crashed and enjoyed my nap. My husband watched some golf on tv. Everyone met back downstairs about 4 and we spend the next couple of hours making appetizers, and dinner all together. The college girls were with us this night too to see their parents and it was so good to see them enjoying and being with their parents because they wanted to. During dinner the doorbell rang and we got to meet a couple of the Lady Raiders basketball team members. They had such great manners, were easy to talk to and fun to get to know. They were invited to stay for dinner and they enjoyed eating around a big table as much as I did. After dinner we enjoyed went back to the living room and enjoyed playing the Newlywed Game! It was fun to watch couples who have been married different lengths of time try to guess what their spouses would say. Insert more laughter here.
I slept like a baby again on Saturday night and we got up to another homemade breakfast and great company. Then Dawn and David had set up chair massages for us and it just put the icing on the cake of a wonderful weekend. Families got together, couples got away from the kiddos for the weekend and we all met new people.
One of the most interesting things for me was meeting former Senator Bob Krueger. He served as a U.S. Senator, and as an ambassador for three different Presidents. Talk about a wealth of knowledge! It was a pleasure to meet him and to hear some of his stories.
I can honestly say I give the Woodrow House Bed & Breakfast 10 out of 10 stars. Welcoming, clean, relaxing, easy to get to, close to a lot of things in Lubbock, price is very reasonable and worth paying. Perfect for a staycation, for family coming into town, friends who want to visit Lubbock, for parents of Texas Tech students to stay while in town for either seeing their kids or for graduation. This B&B is good for everyone. They welcome kids and will put cots in rooms for extra guests. Just another home away from home.
